Award-winning author to attend exhibition opening
The author of the book judged Best-Designed Children's Illustrated Book at the recent Australian Publishers' Association design will attend the opening of an exhibition at the University of the Sunshine Coast tonight.
Melbourne-based Shaun Tan – whose wordless graphic novel, The Arrival, has now won a string of awards – will exhibit his prints and illustrations at USC Gallery from 5 July to 11 August.
Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said Mr Tan’s exhibition would feature his original illustrations, some paintings and prints from books.
“His work investigates the relationships between words and illustration and meaning – about finding meaning with or without text – or when the illustration becomes text,” she said.
The Arrival follows the fortunes of a migrant who leaves his home and family in search of work to support his loved ones.
Mr Tan also will be artist in residence at USC in October, working with Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing and children’s book author Associate Professor Dr Gary Crew.
