Pulse sculpture makes a strong first impression

Artist Konstantin Dimopoulos beside his scuplture Pulse

7 April 2007

A crowd of more than 300 people turned out on Thurdsday evening (5 April) for the official dedication of a 7m-tall sculpture, Pulse, at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery forecourt.

The stunning work, by Melbourne artist Konstantin Dimopoulos, was veiled only by darkness as the crowd arrived, but it was gradually illuminated by six halide lights during the dedication speeches.

At the end of the official dedication by Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art Director Doug Hall AM, Pulse’s 7m-long red and orange rods were positively glowing.

The sculpture is part of the University's campus enhancement program under the USC Building Excellence fundraising campaign.

USC Gallery curator Dawn Oelrich said the fundraising efforts of Senior Honorary Fellow of the University, Mrs Arija Austin of Buderim, led to the generous donation from the Lee Graff Foundation in the United States that allowed the commissioning of the sculpture.

Lee Graff Foundation trustee Scott Morielli and his family travelled from California to attend the dedication ceremony.

The dedication ceremony followed the official opening of the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award (JADA) exhibition at the USC Gallery.

This biennial award is held at the Grafton Regional Gallery and has become Australia’s most prestigious drawing exhibition with $10,000 in prize money for the winning entry. The JADA exhibition will remain on display until 19 May.

The USC Gallery, located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs, is open to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. The Gallery is closed Sundays and public holidays.

The 2007 USC Gallery Exhibition Program is proudly supported by Sajen legal.
