Celebrities to receive USC honorary awards

17 May 2007

Australia Zoo owner Terri Irwin and the ABC’s Australian Story presenter Caroline Jones will be among the honorary award recipients at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s graduation ceremony from 6pm tomorrow (Friday 18 May).

Both celebrities will speak to an anticipated crowd of 2100 people at USC’s Innovation Centre in one of the biggest graduation ceremonies held in Queensland.

Caroline Jones will deliver the Graduation Address before becoming the University’s first honorary Doctor of Letters, to be awarded in recognition of her contribution to Australian broadcasting and journalism.

Terri Irwin is to become an honorary Senior Fellow of the University for her contribution to the Sunshine Coast region and wildlife conservation.

Sunshine Coast Regional Organisation of Councils (SunROC) manager Graeme Pearce, APN News and Media Group Executive Editor Peter Owen, and Frayda Myers Cooper of the University of the Third Age also will become Senior Fellows.

Renowned architect Harold Guida, of Guida Mosely Brown Architects, will become an honorary Doctor of the University in recognition of his work across Australia.

The ceremony will feature an academic procession, the presentation of medals for outstanding USC staff and students, and the presentation of degrees and certificates to 500 graduands by USC’s new Chancellor John Dobson OAM.

Almost 1000 USC students are eligible to graduate tomorrow but many of them are from overseas or interstate, or are now working overseas or interstate.

For the first time, the annual ceremony will be video-streamed live on the internet from the University of the Sunshine Coast website at <www.usc.edu.au>.
