University festival helps promote harmony
Staff and students turned out in force for the University of the Sunshine Coast’s lively celebration of multiculturalism on Harmony Day, Wednesday 21 March.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the Brasserie for the Harmony Day festival which featured cultural music, dancing, fashion and art, belly dancing, indigenous performances and international food.
USC Student Well-being and Health officer Allison Cuskelly said Harmony Day highlighted the relevance of multiculturalism to Australia.
She said the event promoted inclusiveness, community harmony and highlighted the economic benefits that had become available through cultural diversity.
Student ambassador Tomas Passeggi was the Master of Ceremonies for the USC festival which also included the Great Court Race that had been postponed from Orientation in February.
Race winners Holger Schmalz and Jasmyn Gould received $125 each and were presented with the Dean van der Helm Memorial Shield by Dean’s mother Roslyn and stepfather Ken Dalgleish.
Second and third place-getters received $75 and $50 each in both the male and female events, with prize-money donated by the ANZ Bank at Chancellor Park and by Subway.
