Orientation for Headstart students and parents

13 February 2007

The University of the Sunshine Coast will hold a special Orientation event for Headstart students and their parents this evening.

The exciting Headstart program provides Sunshine Coast students in Years 11 and 12 with an opportunity to experience university life and to start studying towards degrees at USC.

USC External Relations Coordinator Kylie Russell said Headstart offered students an authentic pre-taste of lectures, tutorials and lab work and helped overcome some of the problems that first-year university students experienced.

She said more than 400 high school students had been involved in Headstart in the past four years.

“The commencing Headstart students will have their orientation session from 4-7pm in Lecture Theatre 1 and it will include a welcome to the University, academic writing skills, being linked with a buddy and more,” she said.

Ms Russell said the parents’ session, from 6-7pm in Lecture Theatre 6, would be the first orientation event for parents of Headstart students.

“Parents will find out about important information such as key terminology, important dates, how to support their child, a welcome from the VC and a tour of the campus followed by tea and coffee with USC staff,’’ she said.
