Sign up for short-course language programs

27 February 2007

Short-course language programs in French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish are about to start at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Course organiser Elizabeth Henzell said the eight-week Interact courses, run by the USC Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, were structured to ensure personal attention and to enable students to interact with native speakers.

Beginners’ classes in French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Mandarin will be held each Tuesday night from 20 March to 15 May from 6.30-8.30pm (there will no classes on the Tuesday after Easter, 10 April).

Beginners’ classes in Italian and Spanish will be held each Wednesday night starting 21 March from 6.30-8.30pm.

Level 2 classes in all seven languages will be held each Wednesday night at the same times (there will be no classes on the Wednesday after Easter, 11 April, or on ANZAC Day, 25 April).

Students must register for the courses by Wednesday 7 March. The cost of $260 includes all materials.

Ms Henzell said the courses were fun and had a unique teaching structure.

“Weeks one, three, five and seven are teaching nights with grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary building being the focus,” she said.

“Weeks two, four, six and eight are the native speaker nights when the students get to work with native speakers doing language activities.”

“The ratio of one native speaker to four to five students ensures that students get the opportunity to fast-track their audio and pronunciation skills.”
