Schools maths tournament adds up to fun

Hundreds of high school students compete in the 2007 Sunshine Coast Maths Tournament at USC

4 June 2007

The contest was hard-fought, yet friendly, when more than 400 of the region’s top maths students gathered recently for the 10th annual Sunshine Coast Maths Tournament.

More than 80 teams of five to six students from 20 Coast high schools took part in the tournament at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Innovation Centre on Thursday 24 May.

Organiser Bill Holland said teams from as far as Beerwah and Cooroy took part in the event which had a strong emphasis on promoting maths as fun.

“The goal is to give students the opportunity to display their skills in mathematics and to mix with like-minded students,” Mr Holland said.

University of the Sunshine Coast's Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill handed out trophies to the winning teams. The first three place-getters in each age group were:

Year 8: Matthew Flinders Anglican College 1st; Mountain Creek State School 2nd, Matthew Flinders Anglican College 3rd.

Years 10-11: Sunshine Coast Grammar School 1st, Matthew Flinders Anglican College 2nd, Mountain Creek State High School 3rd.

Year 12: Matthew Flinders Anglican College 1st, Mountain Creek State High School 2nd, Sunshine Coast Grammar School 3rd.
