USC academic to be James Nash High principal for a day

Dr David McKay

27 May 2007

James Nash State High School in Gympie is set to have a new principal tomorrow (Monday 28 May) … albeit for only one day.

Principal Darrin Edwards will hand over the reins of the school’s administration to University of the Sunshine Coast’s Head of School of Science and Education Dr David McKay.

Dr McKay, a senior lecturer in biotechnology at USC and a former high school teacher, said he was excited about being a principal for a day.

“I’m really looking forward to linking in with the school and the region and further strengthening the ties between them and the University,” he said.

“This enhances what USC is already doing in Gympie with the Middle School Excellence Program based at James Nash State High School.”

Dr McKay has a formal teaching qualification and has taught at both secondary and tertiary levels.

In 1999, Dr McKay was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at the University of New England and Supervisor of the Year.

And in 2003, he received the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

The “principal for a day” activity has been organised as part of Education Week.
