Artist to construct 7m tall sculpture at USC
Sculptor Konstantin Dimopoulos will this week begin installing seven-metre rods for his stunning sculpture “Pulse” in the forecourt of the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Art Gallery.
The Melbourne-based artist will spend Thursday and Friday (March 29-30) building the sculpture which is set to be dedicated at 7pm on Thursday 5 April by Doug Hall AM, the director of the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane.
The sculpture will be part of the University's campus enhancement program under the USC Building Excellence fundraising campaign.
“Pulse” has been commissioned as a result of a generous donation from the United States through the efforts of a Senior Honorary Fellow of the University Arija Austin.
Mr Dimopoulos said, in his artist’s statement about the sculpture, that “Pulse” would be a site-specific environmental sculpture which focuses on the simple but elegant and dynamic rhythms of nature.
“Pulse is a dynamic sculpture that uses colour, vertical reeds, the natural environment, repetition of form, and the imagination of the viewer to transform a site and echo an organic, primordial past,’’ he said.
“Pulse evokes a beginning, new growth, and renewal, the work climbing upwards, creating an immediate sense of scale for visitors arriving at the Art Gallery.
“It is a dynamic sculpture, moving gently in the wind, and through the use of movement, colour and sound, it explores both the natural beauty inherent within the University area and the rich spirituality of the land.”
