Business student raises funds for Leukaemia Foundation

Tina Rand has raised $2000 for the Leukaemia Foundation

16 March 2007

“Don’t throw flowers … throw money” was the sales pitch made by University of the Sunshine Coast business student Tina Rand as she spoke about the Leukaemia Foundation during a recent tutorial class.

Tina, who will lose her golden locks tonight in support of the Foundation’s annual Shave For A Cure fundraiser, said she urged her classmates to open their wallets and throw her their spare change.

The Arts and Business Marketing student said she was literally showered with coins, mostly five-cent pieces, and gathered up about $40 after her presentation.

That money is part of the $2000 that Tina plans to have raised by tonight, mostly from donations from businesses and friends.

She said she was nervous about having her head shaved with number 2 clippers before a gathering of 25 people tonight … but took consolation in the fact that she would charge them money to watch the event.

Tina said her grandmother had been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2000 and now required regular treatments, including blood transfusions.

“I always thought my grandparents were invincible,” she said. “So when I found out my Nana had leukaemia, it blew me away.”

Tina said she also would help radio station 92.7 Mix FM distribute Leukaemia Foundation T-shirts at Kawana Shoppingworld’s Shave For A Cure event tomorrow (Saturday 11am-2pm).
