Education Minister to open $10m sports stadium

USC's $10 million Indoor Sports Stadium

18 July 2007

Federal Education, Science and Training Minister Julie Bishop will officially open the University of the Sunshine Coast’s impressive $10 million indoor sports stadium tomorrow (19 July) at 2pm.

The Minister also will inspect the University’s new award-winning Science Building and present USC with a prestigious award for its innovative nursing education programs.

State Minister for Local Government, Planning and Sport Andrew Fraser will be among the dignitaries attending the stadium opening.

The 3705 square metre stadium will be the first of its kind on the Sunshine Coast.

It will be used for University and community sporting events – including basketball, netball, futsal, volleyball and badminton – and for University research and teaching.

Construction of the stadium received $5 million from the Federal Government’s Voluntary Student Unionism Transition Fund for Sporting and Recreational Facilities and $2.9 million from the Queensland Government.

The Queensland Government contribution included $2 million from the Department of Education, Training and the Arts and $900,000 from the Department of Sport and Recreation.
