University to celebrate Harmony Day
International and Indigenous dancing and singing and multicultural food will be among the highlights of the University of the Sunshine Coast’s celebration of Harmony Day today (Wednesday 19 March).
The mini-festival to celebrate cultural diversity is open to the public and will be held from noon to 2pm outside the USC Brasserie. Those attending have been encouraged to wear orange clothing for the occasion.
Entertainment will include an Indigenous “welcome to country”, tribal dancing, Indian dancing and singing, Solomon Islander singing, and a presentation by a group called SWAP (Students with a Purpose) which is working to improve health facilities for a poor community in Nepal.
International students at the University will share stories about their cultures and international cuisine will be available.
USC’s Student Well-being and Health officer Allison Cuskelly said Harmony Day highlighted the relevance of multiculturalism to Australia and promoted inclusiveness, community harmony and the economic benefits available through cultural diversity.
