Human canvas for latest USC exhibition

Jenny Clark's image, Matt and Zaid, is part of the Tattoos and piercings exhibition

15 October 2008

The artistry and techniques involved in body decoration will feature in an exciting photographic exhibition to open at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery tomorrow (Thursday 16 October) at 6pm.

The “Tattoos and Piercings: a Human Canvas” exhibition, developed by the Port Macquarie Hastings Regional Gallery in NSW, explores a wide range of body decoration subjects from historical styles and cultural statements to design, tattoo removal and health.

The exhibition will be officially opened by radio presenter Sami Muirhead of Hot 91 at 6pm.

USC Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said the exhibition was a photographic survey of the sub-cultures associated with tattoos and body piercing.

“The images range from detailed close-ups of piercings, Celtic designs, Bandito bikers and tattooing application to fashionable and glamour subjects,” she said.

“Some of it is quite beautiful, but I have to admit some images are a bit confronting.

“The human canvas is an interesting concept that has usually been treated outside the usual artistic practice. But body art is now an accepted part of popular culture that cannot be ignored.”

The exhibition will continue until Saturday 8 November and admission is free.

The USC Gallery is open from 10am to 4pm Mondays to Saturdays. The 2008 USC Gallery Exhibition Program is proudly supported by major sponsor Coastline BMW.
