Indonesian journalists to visit USC tomorrow

28 April 2008

The University of the Sunshine Coast has attracted international attention, with three journalists from major Indonesia publications paying a special visit to the University tomorrow (Tuesday 29 April).

The journalists, from the Jawa Pos, Tempo and Femina, will spend four hours at USC as part of a tour of south-east Queensland to gather information for articles they are preparing about Australian education and culture.

The Jawa Pos has a daily circulation of 600,000, Tempo is the South Pacific’s equivalent of TIME magazine with a weekly circulation of 100,000, while Femina is an award-winning women’s magazine.

USC journalism and Indonesian language students will be treated to a presentation by the journalists about the Indonesian media industry from 1-1.30pm, then tour the University campus and visit the Art Gallery.

The University’s International Administration and Recruitment Officer, Jodi Vallance, said the visit would bring some great benefits for the region and for the University in particular.

“This visit is an opportunity to increase our number of international students and for the University to gain some international media exposure,” she said.

Ms Vallance said publicity in newspapers and magazines in Indonesia was more significant than exposure in electronic media.

“Most of the population in Indonesia don’t have access to electronic media, like in other parts of the world,” she said. “They rely on what is printed in the newspapers and magazines to obtain their information.”
