ASIC Regional Commissioner to speak at USC

12 August 2009

The Queensland Regional Commissioner for the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), Maree Blake, will speak at the next University of the Sunshine Coast Business Professionals’ Forum on Thursday 20 August.

The forum, from 5.30-8pm at USC’s Innovation Centre, will discuss the key work being undertaken by ASIC in response to the global financial crisis and its implications for financial market participants, from consumers and retail investors to regulatory authorities.

Ms Blake will outline ASIC's renewed structure and priorities, its regulatory roles, and how it is working with the wide range of market sectors and stakeholders it regulates.

As a corporate, markets and financial services regulator, ASIC’s work includes the supervision and enforcement of laws that promote honest and diligent conduct of Australian company directors, and the fair and efficient operation of the Australian financial services sector.

Ms Blake was appointed ASIC Queensland Regional Commissioner in September 2008 after previously working as an ASIC specialist director with corporate governance, professional standards and insolvency portfolios.

Prior to joining ASIC in 2005, Ms Blake was a partner in two national accounting firms, specialising in corporate insolvency and reconstruction. She has a Bachelor of Business, is a Fellow of CPA Australia, and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

The University of the Sunshine Coast, in association with CPA Australia and The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, launched the Business Professionals’ Forums in May this year.

The monthly forums provide Coast business people with a chance to hear high-profile guest speakers discussing topical issues, and to spend time networking.

The cost of each forum is $33, which includes light refreshments during networking. To book, contact the USC Faculty of Business on 5430 1221.
