Ceremony to honour USC’s first bequest

25 November 2009

The University of the Sunshine Coast will stage a special ceremony tomorrow (Thursday 26 November) at 1pm to honour the University’s first bequest.

The bequest was from Marjorie Harrold who was an active leader in both Noosa Parks Association and the Noosa Heads Planned Progress Committee from the 1960s to the 1980s.

She has been hailed as the person who prevented high-rise development in the former Noosa Shire.

Marjorie, who passed away in 2007, was married to Dr Arthur Harrold who received an Honorary Doctorate from USC in 1999 for his environmental work. Dr Harrold will attend tomorrow’s ceremony.

USC Foundation Executive Officer Andrew Pentland said Marjorie’s bequest would lead to ongoing benefits for University students, research and local wildlife.

He said the bequest had helped establish a Wildlife Endowment Fund, which will support the study and monitoring of native wildlife on campus – particularly kangaroos.

Tomorrow’s event also will include the launch of the University’s new Beyond Today Society.

Mr Pentland said this society had been established to give recognition to those who plan to leave USC a bequest in their wills.

“The University welcomes the opportunity to honour and thank benefactors during their lifetime for their intention to support the University through a planned gift,” he said.

“Society members will be kept informed of University events and offered opportunities to interact with university staff, students and other society members at special events.”
