USC takes up sporting ‘Blues’ tradition

2 November 2009

The University of the Sunshine Coast will honour the achievements of its top athletes by staging its inaugural Sports Awards Ceremony tomorrow (Tuesday 3 November).

It will be the first time the University will present “Half Blues” and “Full Blues” to its high-achieving sportspeople, as has been the tradition in many universities since the 19th century.

The event will be held in the foyer of USC’s Health and Sport Centre, with guests gathering from 9.30am for a 10am start.

USC Sports Officer Rachel Dickinson said 2004 and 2006 world surf ironwoman champion Kristy Munroe – who graduated from USC with a Bachelor of Business in 2006 – will be the MC.

“This will be the University’s first Sports Awards Ceremony and will introduce two perpetual awards: Sportsperson of the Year, and Team of the Year,” Ms Dickinson said.

“Other awards to be presented will include Half Blues and Full Blues, following the tradition of many other universities.”

Ms Dickinson said the sporting blues tradition dated back to 1829, when rowing teams from Oxford and Cambridge universities each tied a blue scarf, one light blue and one dark blue, to their boats to distinguish themselves.

She said the University of the Sunshine Coast also would present a special “USC Green” award to recognise a student who has voluntarily assisted a sporting team from the University.
