Modern bus interchange to be built at USC

Translink is set to build a large, state-of-the-art bus interchange at the University of the Sunshine Coast over the next four months.

The interchange is expected to boost public transport use and will feature safe, comfortable and reliable facilities including seating and timetable information, shelter, lighting and security surveillance.

It will be the second-biggest facility of its kind on the Sunshine Coast behind the bus interchange at Sunshine Plaza.

Translink’s $5.5 million project also will include construction of a green link between USC and Scholars Drive that will provide access to only buses, cyclists and pedestrians.

This link will enable bus services to travel through the University, rather than enter and exit solely at Sippy Downs Drive, to help reduce traffic congestion and save passengers up to 10 minutes on every trip.

Translink said the project also would enable USC students to travel in greater safety and walk shorter distances in less traffic to attend university.

Construction work at USC is planned to begin on Tuesday 27 January and is expected to continue until June 2009.

Access to some University carparks will be temporarily restricted during construction, but replacement parking has been allocated in other areas around campus.

The flow of pedestrian traffic and service vehicles at USC also will be temporarily altered. Staff and students are advised to be cautious of additional service vehicle traffic on access roads.

Translink bus services will continue to stop at USC during the construction phase, and the University will maintain its provision of after-hours security escorts to the bus stop and carparks.

The project’s design will be on display from 27 January to 30 April at the USC library, and in the administration offices of Chancellor State College’s primary and secondary campuses.

Project team members will be at the Chancellor Park Marketplace, Sippy Downs Drive, on Thursday 29 January from 3.30-5.30pm and Saturday 31 January from 10am-noon.

For more information about the project, contact Translink on 1800 192 112. Translink also will provide updates of the project on its website www.translink.com.au.
