Students learn to ‘future proof’ careers
University of the Sunshine Coast students gained valuable information on how to “future proof” their careers this week at the University’s annual Careers Fair.
The event on Thursday 26 March included displays by 30 companies and four guest presentations by industry experts about finding work and staying employed during the current tough economic conditions.
Fulton Smith and Catherine See of the Australia Pacific Leadership Group delivered a presentation called “Steps you can take to ‘future proof’ your career”.
The duo outlined how graduates can build their leadership capability and confidence to take on the world of work.
Reed Property Group Human Resources manager Laura Fox discussed resume writing, job interviews and how to respond to job offers, while Ernst and Young Human resources Manager Christine Garden addressed the finer points of interview skills.
Re-engagement expert Karen Schmidt spoke about what graduates need to know about working as part of a multi-generational team, as many are likely to join workplaces that have a mix of Baby Boomers, Generation X and Gen Y.
USC’s Industry Liaison Officer Melissa Mehonoshen said the Careers Fair gave students great opportunities to informally network with prospective employers and boost their employment skills and prospects.
“It also gave students the chance to explore opportunities for practical industry experience and to determine whether certain careers are right for them.”
