Art in nature exhibition at USC Gallery
A stunning exhibition of an art in nature project at Tinbeerwah earlier this year will be on display at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery until Saturday 19 December.
The Catchment: Art in Nature project involved visual artists Wendy McGrath, Richard Newport, Corrie Wright, Elizabeth Poole, Mayrah Dreise and Jan Dunlop collaborating to engage the local community in environmental issues.
They staged a 10-day residency aimed at creating ephemeral, site-specific art in nature and commissioned cinematographer Peter Rogers and soundscape artist Leah Barclay to document the project.
The exhibition at the USC Gallery was officially opened by Sunshine Coast Regional Council’s Cultural Heritage and Collections Manager John Waldron on Thursday 26 November.
Exhibition co-curator Wendy McGrath said Catchment provided an exciting opportunity for art lovers.
“Art in nature projects are rarely seen by a wide section of the community,” she said. “This project gave the community an opportunity to engage with the artists while they were on the site at Lake Macdonald and now at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery.
“By seeing how artists think about and make their art through the documentation of Catchment, visitors will have a greater understanding of this art form and hopefully it will stimulate an awareness of the environment.”
USC Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said the exhibition would include documentation of the project, some ephemeral sculpture, and a documentary DVD will be available through the Catchment Collective.
The USC Gallery is open from 10am to 4pm Mondays to Saturdays and admission is free.
