Chef finds right recipe for a good read

USC creative writing student and Maleny chef Anthony Greenwood

5 August 2009

A Maleny chef studying creative writing at the University of the Sunshine Coast has discovered the secret recipe for producing good books.

Anthony Greenwood, who’s in the second year of his Bachelor of Arts (Creative Writing), has just finished a semester as USC’s first intern at a major Brisbane publishing house.

“I worked at the University of Queensland Press one day a fortnight,” said Anthony, 35. “I followed the progress of a fiction book by a Sydney author from first submission of his manuscript to printing and imminent launch.”

Anthony said the insider’s knowledge proved invaluable, both complementing the theory of his USC degree and counting towards his assessment.

“I saw how it all evolved: editing, proofreading, marketing, cover design, departmental and author liaison. My co-workers were so generous with their time and it was great to be challenged and get positive feedback.”

UQP, which employs 15 staff and releases 50 new titles a year, is now seeking another USC student this semester.

Head of Publishing Madonna Duffy said Anthony had brought maturity and life experience to his tasks, ensuring the internship worked “incredibly well”.

“We had long-term intern arrangements with UQ and QUT and this year we added USC,” she said. “It’s been highly successful for us and we’re pleased to offer this opportunity to students based outside of Brisbane.”

She said the benefits were mutual. “Students get real industry experience and that’s an edge for entry-level jobs. In their exit interview, we offer practical tips on getting work.

“They also give back to us, such as offering ideas about promoting to the young adult market or having input on covers.”

USC Communication Lecturer Greg Nash, who set up the program, said he was delighted it would continue.

“I hope we can keep building this relationship,” he said. “Students can see the whole publishing process in a busy workplace, develop good contacts and boost their CVs.”

Anthony aims to continue juggling his chef’s job at the Upfront Club with USC studies and fiction writing.
