USC to participate in Earth Hour
The University of the Sunshine Coast will participate in Earth Hour on Saturday 28 March from 8.30pm.
This global event will involve individuals and organisations turning off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for an hour to demonstrate a commitment to action on climate change.
USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Thomas AM said the University’s involvement on Saturday resonated with its long-held environmental sustainability goals.
He said USC would continue working to engage the region in considering its future and in developing sustainable alternatives.
“The University this month announced the establishment of a Sustainability Research Centre which will focus on issues including coastal management, climate change and water management,” he said.
“This centre will boast the expertise of 40 researchers who will be involved in projects that will have regional, national and international significance.
“USC also will co-host the 2009 Sunshine Coast World Environment Day Festival, which will be held on campus on 28 June.”
Professor Thomas said aspects of sustainability featured throughout USC’s study programs, and the environment had been a key consideration in the University's development.
“The University's location adjacent to the ecologically sensitive Mooloolah River National Park has placed importance on managed development of the site,” he said.
