USC introduces new program in sustainability
The University of the Sunshine Coast will this year introduce a new postgraduate study program in sustainability.
The Graduate Certificate in Sustainability will be offered on campus and online to help satisfy strong industry demand for staff with skills and knowledge in issues like sustainable resource management and climate change.
The introduction of the new program is timely, considering the Sunshine Coast Regional Council’s pledge last year to make the Sunshine Coast the most sustainable region in Australia.
Program leader Dr Dana Thomsen said the four-course program was aimed at empowering individuals and reorienting society towards sustainability at local, regional and global levels.
Dr Thomsen said participants would gain an understanding of the principles underpinning sustainability, along with the tools and technologies to achieve sustainable outcomes.
“As sustainability professionals, our graduates will have innovative and adaptable problem-solving skills ready for a rapidly-changing world, pressing issues such as climate change, and the emerging green economy.”
Dr Thomsen said sustainability experts were in demand in all tiers of government and private industry within Australia and internationally.
The University of the Sunshine Coast also offers major and minor study programs in sustainability for undergraduate students, along with postgraduate programs in Climate Change Adaptation.
The University is still accepting applications to study in 2009. Contact Tania Halliday on 5430 2876 for more details.
Dr Thomsen and USC’s Regional Sustainability Research Group director Professor Tim Smith will be among the guest speakers at a Noosa Environment Day event at Noosaville on Sunday 8 February.
