Top drawing exhibition opens at Gallery

Godwin Bradbeer's Man in squared space

26 March 2009

Drawings by some of Australia’s top artists are included in an exhibition that will be on display at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery from 26 March until Friday 24 April.

The Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award (JADA) exhibition, which showcases excellence in contemporary Australian drawing, was officially opened by Grafton Regional Gallery director Jude McBean.

USC Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said the exhibition was the biennial flagship of the Grafton Regional Gallery in New South Wales.

“Artists from around Australia submitted drawings to contend for the JADA first prize of $15,000 that was awarded in October 2008,” she said.

“The contest was judged by Hendrick Koleberg, Senior Curator of Australian Prints, Drawings and Watercolours at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

“Besides the winning entry, the Grafton Regional Gallery purchased additional works for its collection. Over the past 20 years, Grafton has amassed an impressive collection of drawing to rival any in Australia.”

Ms Oelrich said this high-profile exhibition was an opportunity for Sunshine Coast residents to see works by top artists from all states of Australia.

“Many of the artists included in the exhibition – such as Wendy Sharpe, Nicci Haynes and Godwin Bradbeer – have international reputations,” she said.

The University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery, located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs, is open to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. The Gallery is closed Sundays and public holidays.
