Dr Karl to speak at USC conference

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki

29 July 2009

One of Australia’s most enthusiastic and entertaining scientists, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, will speak at a conference at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday 12 August.

The popular television presenter and author will deliver a keynote address at a special Science Centre of Innovation and Professional Practice (SCIPP) event at USC’s Innovation Centre.

The “SCIPP to the Future” conference is for the professional development of Sunshine Coast teachers, but the public is welcome to attend Dr Kruszelnicki’s presentation and another session featuring political heavyweight Dr Barry Jones.

Dr Jones is a former teacher, lawyer, politician, writer and broadcaster and he currently chairs the Victorian Schools Innovation Commission. He also appears regularly on ABC TV’s quiz show, The Einstein Factor.

He will discuss international perspectives on science in his address during a session from 9-11.30am, which also will feature a panel discussion involving leading USC academics Professor Ian Lowe, Professor Noel Meyers, Dr David McKay and former Maroochy Shire deputy mayor Zrinka Johnston.

Dr Kruszelnicki will speak on the topic of “Why is science so important?” between 3.15pm and 5pm.

Entry fee for the morning session is $44, and the afternoon session is $22. USC students who present their ID cards will be admitted for half-price.

For more details, contact SCIPP project officer Marina Fitzpatrick on 5453 3252, 0407 524 960, or via email at <scipp@eq.edu.au>.
