Food stall to whet appetite for languages

3 June 2009

The University of the Sunshine Coast's next Market Day tomorrow (Thursday 4 June) will have a distinct Indonesian flavour.

Chicken satay and other authentic Indonesian cuisine will be sold at the markets to set tastebuds alight and, hopefully, tongues wagging.

Kadek of Kadek’s Kitchen, a regular stall holder at the Eumundi Markets, has been invited by a team of USC Public Relations students to help promote the University’s language programs in Indonesian, Italian and Japanese.

The PR students believe Kadek’s flavoursome food will whet the appetite for Indonesian culture and language.

Team member Lauren Fisher said Kadek will be cooking alongside a languages stall that will display brochures on USC’s three language programs.

“Current languages students also will be available to answer any questions and provide insights into language learning,” she said.

“Language education at USC presents many opportunities for students, including the chance to study overseas, be involved in cross-institutional study, and to gain international employment.

“Our languages stall hopes to inspire students to take advantage of these opportunities and understand the value of learning a foreign language.”

USC’s Market Days, held from 10am to 2pm on the first Thursday each month, are open to the public and often feature stalls selling jewellery, crafts, bags, shoes, handmade soap and organic produce.
