International librarians to inspect USC
Dozens of librarians from as far away as Sweden, Latvia, Canada and Singapore will visit the University of the Sunshine Coast’s award-winning library today (Friday 15 May).
They will be part of a group of 40 library managers attending a conference of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Metropolitan Libraries Section this week in Brisbane.
USC Director of Information Services Sandra Jeffries said the MetLib 2009 conference had the theme “Embracing the future” and offered delegates an opportunity to present and discuss recent innovations.
“There also will be site visits to libraries and cultural institutions in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast,” she said.
“The delegates are interested in USC's Library, in a physical sense, because of its award-winning status and to look at our service delivery.
“The visit is pretty exciting as it will give us a chance to highlight our library, and the University as a whole, and will provide our staff with a great networking opportunity.”
The MetLib Conference is attended by managers of metropolitan libraries that serve populations of 400,000 or more. This year's conference has been co-hosted by Brisbane City Council and the State Library of Queensland.
About 40 delegates from Australian and international library services will attend, including delegates from Canada, China, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore and Sweden.
