Linked Landscapes at USC Gallery

Detail from one of Anneke Silver's works

The atmosphere of North Queensland’s vast and unique landscape features strongly in a new exhibition that will open at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery on Thursday 16 July at 6pm.

The exhibition, called Linked Landscapes, is by prominent Townsville artist, Dr Anneke Silver.

It will be officially opened by Dr Ross Searle, the former Director of the University of Queensland Art Museum and Townsville Regional Art Gallery.

Exhibition manager and Cairns Regional Gallery Curator Brian Robinson said Dr Silver’s large landscapes were composed of grids, with each piece linking to reveal the whole.

“Awe and respect for nature is central to the artist’s practice, and her vistas encourage the viewer to look further than the customary one-off glance,” he said.

“With a long history of artists travelling to Far North Queensland seeking the frontier or escaping the urban, Linked Landscapes is particularly pertinent to the Cairns Regional Gallery as a component of its touring exhibition program.”

Cairns Regional Gallery Director Paul Brinkman said Dr Silver’s work added a new dimension to the expanse of space inherent in the Australian landscape.

“Her vistas are geometrically divided into convenient pieces – a take on the human need of controlling the environment, distilling the complex into parts and harnessing the unknown,” he said.

A small series of work by artist Alan Brown also will be on display. This exhibition, called Bali Drift, provides a subtle blend of what happens when an artist paints the Glasshouse Mountains and his mind drifts to Bali.

Both exhibitions will continue until Saturday 22 August.

The University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery, located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs, is open to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. The Gallery is closed Sundays and public holidays.
