PR student to promote Newcastle Knights

Public Relations student Michelle Smit

29 October 2009

University of the Sunshine Coast student Michelle Smit has kicked off her ambition “to eventually become CEO of a National Rugby League club”.

When the footy-loving Buderim 20-year-old finishes her Bachelor of Public Relations at USC next month, she will start packing for her new job as Media and Publicity Coordinator for the Newcastle Knights.

“It’s an incredible opportunity for someone of my age, to not even be finished my degree and have the dream job secured – it hasn’t sunk in,” she said.

“The Knights have a great culture within the club and supporters like no other within the league.

“I’m really looking forward to beginning work, right next to their home ground in Newcastle, on 18 January and to the start of another exciting season.”

Michelle, who gained an OP of 5 at Mountain Creek State High School, said her new position combined her two passions – league and public relations.

“At the age of 17, I watched a State of Origin game with my Dad, and from then I was hooked,” she said.

“In my first year at University in 2007, I discovered Public Relations and this year, I completed an internship with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.

“I wrote stories for publication on the club’s official website and in their newsletter, Sea Eagles News. I prepared items for their 2010 membership brochure, assisted during player web chats and interviewed players and staff for Manly Web TV.

“I sought the internship so I could be exposed to the high profile and high pressure industry, to make sure it was right for me. It was perfect.”

Michelle said USC’s efforts to help students engage with industry had provided her with vital hands-on experience.

“I’m so grateful to the staff, especially Public Relations Lecturer Dr Amalia Matheson, for the assistance and support with my internship,” she said. “My favourite courses have been those that have challenged me, particularly Crisis and Issues Management.”
