Student steps up for shoe shop opportunity
Getting your foot in the door in the highly competitive design industry can be a major challenge.
So University of the Sunshine Coast student Mitch Reyes, 20, took the logical step of starting with shoes.
Mitch’s recent rebranding work for Trainers Sneaker Boutique at Mooloolaba has provided him with an opportunity to showcase his creative flair.
The Computer-Based Design student, who has almost completed his degree, keenly accepted a challenge from Trainers’ owner Drew Miller to design a new logo for the store.
Mr Miller said he was pleased with the clean, stylish and distinctive design that Mitch developed as it captured the identity he wanted for his shop.
He said Mitch’s work would soon feature on the store’s signage, business cards and website, and on promotional stickers and T-shirts.
Mitch recently received recognition at USC’s annual end-of-year Design exhibition with a highly commended award from industry judges.
His portfolio of work also attracted the most number of votes from the 756 people who visited the exhibition in November, delivering him the People’s Choice Award for the Best Portfolio.
“I was stoked. That award gives me an extra push,” he said.
The Mountain Creek State High School graduate said he felt indebted to USC’s design academics and the University’s strong links with industry.
“The teachers at USC have been a real big help,” he said. “They have real-world experience, so they didn’t sugar-coat anything. They just told us how it is.”
He said an internship with Media Mojo at Noosa this year also gave him greater insight into corporate-based design work and helped him develop his skills in dealing with clients.
