Stunning paper sculptures at USC Gallery
An amazing and engaging exhibition called Not the Flat Surface will open on Thursday 30 April at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery.
The exhibition, which explores the multiple possibilities of paper-making and its use to create three-dimensional sculpture, will be officially opened by Noosa Regional Gallery Director Christine Ballinger.
The public is welcome to attend the official opening at 6pm on Thursday 30 April. The exhibition will continue at the Gallery until Saturday 6 June.
Not the Flat Surface will be presented by the Papermakers of Queensland with guests from the other peak paper-making bodies in Australia including the Papermakers of Victoria, Primrose Paper Arts, and Euraba Paper Mill at Boggabilla.
USC Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said the exhibition would feature works by some of Australia’s top fibre and paper-making artists.
“By taking the ancient craft of paper-making and then manipulating the product with contemporary sensibility, the artists show the versatility of paper as a medium,” Ms Oelrich said.
“The paper is so sensual and beautiful … these are not works on paper, they are works of paper.
“Paper-making is a process of connection with raw materials: plant fibres to create pulps to create organic artworks that speak of the link between humans and nature.
“This process presents art pieces that are unexpected and that stand apart from the white paper that we use daily without thinking.
“There are small works and some very large works. Watch out especially for the installation by the Primrose Paper Arts group of New South Wales and Silvery Glide – Sighting the Whale. They are sensational.”
