USC’s Open Day attracts large crowd
Prospective students from as far away as Mackay and northern New South Wales were among the 4,100 people who attended the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Open Day on Sunday 16 August.
Organisers were delighted with the roll-up to the annual event, which showcased the University’s range of undergraduate and postgraduate study programs.
USC’s External Relations Coordinator Kylie Russell said the Open Day visitors particularly enjoyed speaking one-on-one with academics and admissions staff, and taking part in campus tours led by current students.
“Visitors were keen to find out about USC’s wide range of study programs and what they need to do to apply to study here in 2010,” she said.
“Our Nursing and Paramedic Science lecturers received a large number of inquiries, as did the academics in Tourism, Leisure and Event Management.
“There also was plenty of interest in our Tertiary Preparation Pathway program, which offers an alternative entry option for those who might not have studied for some time.”
Ms Russell said hands-on activities in science, computer-based design, and software design were popular, as were displays of student projects in business, industry, and regional and urban planning.
She said the number of visitors to this year’s Open Day was up by about 20 percent on last year, reflecting a growing interest in tertiary education.
The University of the Sunshine Coast, which first opened in 1996 with 524 students, now has a student population of almost 7,000.
