Paper sculptures on display at USC Gallery
An exhibition of paper-making and three-dimensional paper sculptures will be on display at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery from Thursday 30 April to Saturday 6 June.
The exhibition, called Not the Flat Surface, features works by some of Australia’s top fibre and paper-making artists. It was officially opened by Noosa Regional Gallery Director Christine Ballinger.
USC Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said Not the Flat Surface was presented by the Papermakers of Queensland in association with other peak Australian paper-making bodies including the Papermakers of Victoria, Primrose Paper Arts, and Euraba Paper Mill at Boggabilla.
Ms Oelrich said the exhibition featured art pieces that were unexpected and that stood apart from the white paper that we used daily.
“By taking the ancient craft of paper-making and then manipulating the product with contemporary sensibility, the artists show the versatility of paper as a medium,” she said. “The paper is so sensual and beautiful … these are not works on paper, they are works of paper.
“There are small works and some very large works. Watch out especially for the installation by the Primrose Paper Arts group of New South Wales and Silvery Glide – Sighting the Whale. They are sensational.”
Schools can arrange class tours of the exhibition by contacting USC Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich on 5459 4633.
The University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery, located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs, is open to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. The Gallery is closed Sundays and public holidays.
