USC to launch Reconciliation Action Plan

9 October 2009

The University of the Sunshine Coast will launch its first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) on Monday 12 October at USC’s Innovation Centre auditorium.

The plan has been developed over the past two years to help ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at USC have real opportunities to improve their social and economic outcomes.

It sets specific targets for the University in developing greater relationships, respect and opportunities for Indigenous people.

Guest speaker at the launch will be Dr Jackie Huggins AM, the Deputy Director of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Unit of the University of Queensland.

The RAP launch at 1pm will be a highlight of USC’s third annual Indigenous Education Symposium which also starts on 12 October.

The three-day symposium – which aims to raise awareness of Indigenous culture and facilitate understanding between Indigenous Australians and the wider community – will include presentations and workshops about Indigenous culture and affairs.

Symposium keynote speaker will be Professor Yvonne Cadet-James, Head of the School of Indigenous Australian Studies at James Cook University and Chancellor of the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education.

Professor Cadet-James will present findings from her research into the development of an Indigenous family wellbeing program.

The first day of the symposium on Monday 12 October is open to the public.

The final two days are open to high school students only and will feature interactive workshops in traditional art, cultural awareness and a campus walk exploring traditional Indigenous food sources.
