Expo set to inspire young scientists
Hundreds of school students will try their hand at forensics, robotics and aerodynamics next week at the second annual Science, Engineering and Technology Expo at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
About 270 students from 41 schools from across the Sunshine Coast will attend this event for Year 5 students on Tuesday (9 June) and Year 9 students on Thursday (11 June).
The CSIRO’s “Labs on Legs” program will provide hands-on science and technology workshops at the expo, including sessions on forensics, gene technology, robotics and chemistry.
The annual expo is held in USC’s state-of-the-art laboratories to provide students with scientific activities that they might not have access to in their schools.
Organisers aim to inspire students to continue science and technology subjects into their senior high school years to help broaden their career options.
A highlight of the expo will be an Engineering Challenge, supported by the Sunshine Coast Chapter of Engineers Australia, for the Year 9 students on Thursday afternoon.
This challenge will see teams of students tackle various experiments based on engineering principles like aerodynamics, electromagnetism and structural engineering.
The expo has been organised by the Queensland Government Office for Women, Education Queensland’s Science Centre of Innovation and Professional Practice, and the University of the Sunshine Coast, in partnership with Engineers Australia and with support from Australian Geographic.
