USC academic to edit scientific journal
University of the Sunshine Coast academic Professor John Lowe has been appointed senior editor of a major health publication, the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health.
Professor Lowe said he was delighted about his four-year appointment to edit the Public Health Association of Australia’s prestigious scientific journal which is published every two months.
The journal features articles about cutting-edge research projects and also includes occasional reviews, opinion pieces and historical reports.
“As senior editor I will be responsible, with my other editors, for the scientific direction and quality of the journal,” Professor Lowe said.
“I direct the manuscripts going to reviewers and then I must decide whether to accept or reject manuscripts based on reviewers’ comments.”
Professor Lowe became USC’s Head of School of Health and Sport Sciences last year, after previously working as Professor and Head of the Department of Community and Behavioural Health, College of Public Health, at the University of Iowa in the United States.
For the past three decades, he has worked in the area of intervention studies for the cessation of smoking among adults, pregnant women, and the prevention and cessation of smoking among youths.
Professor Lowe is internationally known for his work in skin cancer prevention and he continues to focus his research on community development and empowerment to make sustainable long-term changes to promote health.
USC offers a range of health and sport science degrees, including Paramedic Science, Nursing Science, Occupational Therapy, Nutrition and Dietetics, Sport and Exercise Science and Clinical Exercise Science.
