USC to present two $1,500 sporting bursaries

20 January 2009

Two $1,500 University of the Sunshine Coast Sporting Bursaries will be presented at the Caloundra RSL Sports Star of the Year awards night on Friday 30 January.

These bursaries aim to help talented athletes who want to pursue their sporting dreams and, at the same time, build a solid foundation for a future career through study.

The University of the Sunshine Coast has long been a supporter of the annual Sports Star of the Year awards, and USC students have often featured in the award line-ups.

World lifesaving champion Kristy Munroe, who won the Sports Star of the Year award in 2002, completed a Bachelor of Business degree at USC in 2005.

And Paralympic swimmer Marayke Jonkers – an award finalist in 2005 and again this year after winning a silver medal in Beijing – finished her Bachelor of Social Science (Community Work) at USC in 2004 and a Bachelor of Arts (Communication) in 2006.

Many Coast athletes also train at the University which recently expanded its sporting facilities by opening a huge indoor sports stadium and a five-storey Health and Sport Centre.

This centre will be instrumental in training many of the health professionals that the Sunshine Coast region will require as it continues to grow.

USC’s wide range of degree programs includes some specialised programs in the fields of Health and Sport Sciences.

Among them are Sport and Exercise Science, Nutrition and Dietetics, Clinical Exercise Science, Psychology and Exercise Science, Paramedic Science, Nursing Science and Occupational Therapy.

Applications to enrol in any of these degrees and others for 2009 are still being accepted. Contact USC on (07) 5430 2890 or visit <www.usc.edu.au> for more details.
