USC thanks Sunshine Coast teachers

Education students Nathan Katterns, Kylie Cavanagh and Daniel Brace are enjoying work placements at local schools

26 October 2009

The University of the Sunshine Coast will issue a special thankyou to the region’s school teachers this week, ahead of World Teachers’ Day on Friday 30 October.

USC Workplace Learning Coordinator Sonya Smith said the University had a debt of gratitude to the hundreds of teachers who acted as mentors for USC Education students during work placements each year.

Ms Smith said the teachers provided invaluable guidance, advice and support for the trainee teachers and contributed greatly to their education as educators.

She said 360 USC students were currently on work placements, mostly at schools on the Sunshine Coast.

“I’d like to say a big thank you from the University to all those people who are mentoring, or who have mentored our students in the past,” she said.

“We really are looking forward to continuing our partnership with teachers in our region because we have a lot to offer one another.”

There are about 1,000 students enrolled in various Education programs, from undergraduate to postgraduate, at USC.

That number is expected to increase next year as the University launches a new Bachelor of Education (Primary) degree, which is attracting plenty of interest.

A special information evening about this new degree will be held from 6.30-8.30pm on Wednesday 28 October. To attend, contact USC’s External Relations on 5456 5000 or register online.
