University expands wireless network
The University of the Sunshine Coast has ramped up its wireless network to provide greater and more flexible computer access for students.
USC last year successfully trialled a wireless network for the University’s Library and its surrounds, and this year has extended the network to five other locations on campus.
Three of the new locations include popular meeting spots of students at the Brasserie, Cafe J and the recently-opened Cafe C in the University’s new Chancellery. Other locations are the new Health and Sport Centre and the second floor of Building J.
USC’s Information Technology Services Director Maureen Klinkert said the wireless network would offer students greater mobility, convenience and comfort in being able to use their own laptops in more locations around campus.
“It will enable students with compatible wireless laptops to access the Internet, their email and other web-based services,” she said.
“It also will help them avoid having to wait for a University computer during busy periods in the Library’s Information Commons or at other computer labs.”
Ms Klinkert said the response from students to last year’s trial of the wireless network had been very encouraging.
“We were amazed at the feedback over those months on how the network was taken up and used,” she said. “This larger network is a major expansion of that highly-successful wireless pilot in response to the requirements of our students.”
To use the network, students must have a wireless capable laptop with the 802.11g specification, with operating systems of either MAC OSX version 10.4 or later, or the English versions of Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista (32 bit only).
Only those with a USC log-in are able to access the wireless network. More information is available on the University’s Portal.
