USC to help 200 with career choices
The University of the Sunshine Coast is set to host 200 of the region’s Year 10 students at the 2009 Business Enterprise Day, on 7 October.
The full-day event encourages students to consider the possible business-related career paths they can pursue. Working in small groups, students will workshop with mentors from a variety of industry groups.
The day is a collaborative effort of USC’s Faculty of Business and the Business Educators Association of Queensland, further supported by Sunshine Coast Enterprises.
Sam Sheppard, founder and director of Coast-based construction firm the Buildmore Group, will present the keynote speech.
Ms Sheppard recently launched the Women into Building Housing Showcase project to raise awareness and acceptance of women in construction.
She said it is important to encourage students to utilise their individual skills to build their career.
“You can not bank you time, you only get to spend it once, but your choices add up and compound. The more good choices you make the more likely you are to achieve your goals,” she said.
“It is important to discover your point of difference. What is it that you can offer that no one else can match? When you can demonstrate your point of difference, you will stand out and be noticed by others.”
Julie Flanagan, USC’s Business Development Coordinator within the Faculty of Business, said the day aimed to introduce students to a wide diversity of businesses and business people, to encourage them to continue studying business subjects at school.
“Participating in Business Enterprise Day puts some ‘real world’ stories to the students’ school studies,” she said.
