Sophie is Innovation Centre ambassador
University of the Sunshine Coast communication student Sophie Barnard knows experience is a major asset for young job seekers.
That’s why the 22-year-old Buderim resident is juggling two part-time jobs as well as her final semester of a communications degree majoring in public relations.
And her latest role will help other USC students gain experience by tapping into the work opportunities offered by 28 businesses now based at the Innovation Centre on campus.
“I started on 1 June as the Innovation Centre’s first Student Ambassador,” Sophie said. “I applied after a tutor recommended it and I saw the part-time position advertised on USC’s Career Hub website.
“It’s fantastic because I’ve gained so much for my career through the University and now I can help connect students to work experience, internships, research projects and part-time jobs in industries based here on campus.”
Sophie also works for USC tutor Michelle Smytheman’s Coast-based public relations company and recently finished an internship in the marketing department of Australia Zoo.
“I’m really enjoying my degree, especially the one-on-one time with academics such as Public Relations Lecturer Dr Amalia Matheson who inspire you with their passion and drive,” she said.
“My challenge with the Innovation Centre is to get the word out to busy students that these opportunities are right on their doorstep, in companies ranging from information technology to environmental science to design.”
