Surfin’ students get on board at USC

22 July 2009

Technology and surfing merged on screen today at the University of the Sunshine Coast as lecturers helped up to 100 children make mini-movies of local surf comps.

It’s the third year of the Caloundra Surfabout project, with Year 5-7 students from state and independent primary schools across the Coast enjoying the one-day video editing course at USC.

USC Lecturer in Computer Based Design Uwe Terton said its popularity had doubled compared to the first course in 2007.

“This brings together the young people who love surfing with those who love technology,” he said. “They produce movies of only a few minutes with narration or soundtracks.”

This year the students’ movies will be exhibited on the Surfabout website <www.surfabout.olr.qld.edu.au> and also shared by students using their ipods.

“We’re adopting the latest technology used by the students,” said Mr Terton, who was assisted by Lecturer in e-Media Phil Chen.
