USC graduate and tutor Sarah Pye writes a guidebook for travelling families

19 October 2009

A Buderim mum who this year gained her Master of Communication at the University of the Sunshine Coast will launch her first book at Yandina on Saturday 31 October.

Sarah Pye, who now tutors in online journalism and tourism promotions at USC, will celebrate her 270-page guidebook ‘Kids Welcome To Queensland’ alongside a crowd of families at The Ginger Factory from 10am to noon.

Sarah said the book was inspired by her travels as a single mum with daughter Amber, now 9, and the process was honed by her university studies.

“USC was paramount to the completion of my book because my thesis researched the needs and desires of travelling families”, she said.

“I couldn’t have done it without the support of staff such as Associate Professor Stephen Lamble, who heads USC’s School of Communication.”

The self-published book rates hundreds of Queensland attractions, events, activities, tours, places to eat and accommodation in the context of three age groups – preschool, primary and teen.

It is designed to be user-friendly in size and content – the A5 size fits into a glovebox or handbag, and the advice appeals to both parents and children.

“It’s just released but I’ve had an overwhelming response,” Sarah said.

Tourism Queensland praised it as a “terrific, practical guide for families”.

Sarah and Amber will travel Victoria this summer to research the second book before Sarah resumes her work at USC next year.

Sarah, who also edits a magazine for children on the Sunshine Coast, will continually update information for the book series on her website <www.kidswelcome.com.au>.

It sells for $29.95 and is being distributed to bookshops and tourism outlets.
