Author Andy Griffiths entertains at festival

7 June 2010

About 2,500 students from Years 5 to 7 will enjoy the special primary school day of the Voices on the Coast literature festival at the University of the Sunshine Coast tomorrow, Tuesday 8 June.

Former punk singer and English teacher Andy Griffiths, one of Australia’s funniest authors who wrote the ‘Bum’ and ‘Bad’ series for children, will present between 9.15am and 12.45pm at the USC Innovation Centre.

Other top attractions will include the Shake&Stir theatre company, with its popular interpretations of Shakespeare, and “Cartoon Dave” Hackett’s instructional drawing chaos.

Illustrator and USC student Michelle Pike, who worked on TV star Andrew Daddo’s children’s book ‘Letters to Santa’, and USC Associate Professor of Creative Writing Gary Crew are among the dozens of presenters.

Workshops will ensure interaction between children and their favourite writers between 9.15am and 2.15pm, including Kerry Brown and Belinda Jeffrey.

Other sessions include ‘Real Things, Fleas and Freaks’ by Brian Falkner, ‘Ghosts, Time Travel and Talismans’ by Belinda Murrell and ‘I Can’t Draw! Are you sure?’ by Sarah Davis.

The 15th annual Voices youth literature festival, organised by Immanuel Lutheran College and USC, continues this week with events for adults such as a Literary Breakfast with actor/author William McInnes.
