Author brings inquiring minds to USC

Professor Yoland Wadsworth

24 September 2010

A best-selling author of books on social research will deliver a public lecture at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday 6 October.

Professor Yoland Wadsworth, an internationally acclaimed social scientist from RMIT University in Melbourne, has sold more than 50,000 copies of her textbooks including 1997’s ‘Do It Yourself Social Research’. Her latest book was released this month.

Her lecture at USC, called ‘Human Inquiry for Life: Building in research and evaluation to human services’, will explain an integrated framework for research that she has helped pioneer in Australia.

USC Sociology Lecturer Dr Lucinda Aberdeen expected the popularity of Professor Wadsworth’s books and her experience in the field to attract a large audience.

“In this public lecture, Professor Wadsworth will outline a new theory based on 38 years of human services practice-based research,” she said.

The “integrating theory” proposes that inquiring by people can address issues of conflict, dominance, subservience and inequality.

The talk will be the final of a trilogy at USC by outstanding social science and social work academics. Professor Jim Ife spoke on rights, community and democracy on 8 September and Professor Jan Fook will speak about ‘social work – what is it good for?’ on 29 September.

The public and media are welcome to hear Professor Wadsworth at Lecture Theatre 1, Building K, from 3pm to 4pm on 6 October.
