Boost for Engineering, Paramedic Science

The University of the Sunshine Coast is about to construct a semi-industrial building on campus to give Engineering and Paramedic Science students a place to really get their hands dirty.

The 1050 square metre Engineering and Science Training Facility will provide large, open spaces suitable for concrete stress tests, hydraulic engineering experiments, photovoltaic cell (solar cell) testing and accident scene simulations.

Groundwork for the $5 million project has begun, following successful applications by USC for funding through two Federal Government programs: the Capital Development Pool Program; and the Teaching and Learning Capital Fund.

USC’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill said the training facility would be built by Evans Harch Pty Ltd by the end of this year, giving the University’s Engineering and Paramedic Science programs a welcome boost in 2011.

“This new building will provide us with state-of-the-art facilities for two of our newest and most popular teaching programs,” he said.

“For both Engineering and for Paramedic Science, it’s clear that we need teaching spaces for practical experiments.”

Professor Hill said the new training facility also would feature several laboratories and tutorial rooms. It will be built on the southern side of the University, near Translink’s new bus interchange.

Those interested in studying Engineering, Paramedic Science or any other USC degree program can come along to the University of the Sunshine Coast’s annual Open Day on Sunday 15 August.

This event, from 10am to 3pm, will feature seminars about job prospects in particular fields, as well as presentations on how to apply to study, financial support available to students and the University’s support services.

There also will be guided tours of campus facilities and nearby accommodation complexes, and the chance to chat with USC staff and students about undergraduate and postgraduate study programs and research activities.
