A 20-year-old University of the Sunshine Coast student intent on helping others through nursing has received a helping hand of her own from the War Widows Guild Maroochydore Sub-branch.

Caloundra’s Casey Manns, a former Sunshine Coast Grammar School student, received the $500 bursary awarded annually by the guild to a USC Nursing student under the age of 25.

At the ceremony the bursary, which was established in 1996, was renamed to honour Wyn Rahilly, a former Guild and U3A stalwart who died recently.

USC Foundation Executive Officer Andrew Pentland said Wyn, who received one of the first Honorary Senior Fellowships from USC in 1999, was heavily involved in building relationships between the University and community groups.

Casey said the bursary, which assists the next generation of women to embark on nursing careers, would help pay for University fees as she juggled part-time work and study.

“I love my USC Nursing Science degree and the fact the campus is close by,” she said. “I’m really enjoying the practical placements so far, at an aged care centre, a hospital and a school.”

Mr Pentland said the University appreciated the support of the War Widows Guild, which started during World War II to provide companionship and support.

“These bursaries are encouraging USC students to pursue careers in nursing others back to health, so it’s a fitting relationship,” he said.

Guild members who attended the ceremony also toured the campus, including the Nursing laboratories and Occupational Therapy rooms, to see how USC is training the next generation of health care professionals.
