USC to participate in Earth Hour
The University of the Sunshine Coast will highlight its commitment to the environment by switching off its lights for Earth Hour on Saturday 27 March.
This global event involves millions of individuals and organisations turning off non-essential lights and electrical appliances for an hour as a show of support for taking action on climate change.
USC’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Thomas AM said the University’s involvement in Earth Hour resonated with its long-held environmental sustainability goals.
He said the environment had been a key consideration in the development of the University campus at Sippy Downs, and aspects of sustainability featured throughout its study programs.
USC last year opened a Sustainability Research Centre, which is now involved in nationally significant research projects into coastal management, climate change and water management.
Among them is a climate change adaptation assessment of South East Queensland in conjunction with the Queensland and Australian Governments, the CSIRO Climate Adaptation National Research Flagship, the University of Queensland and Griffith University.
Professor Thomas said USC would continue its work in engaging the Sunshine Coast region to consider its future and to develop sustainable alternatives.
“We also will be co-hosting the annual Sunshine Coast World Environment Day Festival, to be held on campus on Sunday 6 June,” he said.
