Gallery art focuses on natural beauty

Lin Martin’s mangrove flow, giclee print, 35 x 50 cm, 2010

The surprising beauty of nature is the link between two new exhibitions to be held at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery from Thursday 22 July to Saturday 21 August.

Lin Martin’s “Reeds Talking, Mountains Walking” traces a journey of spiritual discovery through photographic essays depicting nature, beauty and connection during times of impending ecological calamity.

USC Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said each chapter was defined by a habitat surrounding the artist’s Sunshine Coast home: Beach, Dunes, Headlands, Heaths, Mangroves, Mountaintops, Waterways and Woodlands.

“Lin combines a scientific background with an artist’s eye and writer’s ability in this thought-provoking exhibition of photography and artist books,” she said.

Mervyn Jefferson’s “A Focus on the Invisible” presents a series of colourful, atmospheric paintings inspired by the effects of the weather on man-made and organic surfaces.

Ms Oelrich said the Sunshine Coast art teacher’s work was beautiful and surprising in its interpretation of nature’s actions.

“Mervyn observes and records the way rain stains cement or how a heavy chain’s abrasive action wears away the paint on a truck.”

The Gallery is located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs. It is open free to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. The Gallery is closed Sundays and public holidays.
