Graduate Kelsie thrives at tax time
A Business degree from the University of the Sunshine Coast has taken 20-year-old Kelsie Fahey from Gympie to Noosa to Brisbane, straight into a job with the fifth largest accountancy network in the world.
With money, tax and audits on people’s minds at the busiest time of year, Kelsie’s success will inspire potential USC students at the University’s annual Open Day on Sunday 15 August from 10am to 3pm.
She was offered the graduate position as an accountant with BDO’s Audit division in May last year, while living at Noosa and studying at Sippy Downs.
The job was kept for her to start in March this year, after completing her degree and moving to Brisbane.
“Working for BDO is exciting,” said Kelsie, who attended St Patrick's College in Gympie. “The work is challenging, the clients are interesting and I have learnt a lot about auditing and working in a professional environment.”
She continues to gain support including inductions, training and financial and mentoring assistance as part of BDO’s graduate recruitment program.
Kelsie, who did a double major in Accounting and Financial Planning, said she had drawn on knowledge and experience gained through USC to succeed both in the initial job interview process and now in the workplace.
“I have had the confidence to communicate with my peers and clients regarding a wide range of accounting issues,” she said. “USC has provided me with a sound knowledge base that I can build on throughout my career.”
Kelsie said she chose the University because of the wide range of accounting courses, the diverse expertise of lecturers and the close interaction between lecturers and students.
“USC’s course content was more than comparable to city universities, with the added bonus of being able to live on the Sunshine Coast,” she said.
The USC Open Day on 15 August will include tours, demonstrations, displays, information sessions and presentations by staff, students and graduates.
It is tailored to help anyone considering studying at the Sippy Downs campus, whether they are school-leavers, mature-aged or postgraduates.
USC Senior Lecturer in Accounting Dr Peter Baxter said Kelsie’s presentation would show potential students how they could make the most of a USC degree.
